چکیده

The graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid onto gelatinized potato starch has been carried out at 70 0 C using chromic acid as initiator. The different reaction parameters such as effect of temperature, initiator and monomer concentrations were optimized to determine the maximum percentage grafting. The maximum grafting efficiency of 87.5% was optimized at reaction temperature (60 0 C), monomer concentration (0.81molL -1 ) and initiator concentration (0.02 mmol.L -1 ). The grafted samples were evaluated for other physico-chemical properties such as swelling behavior, moisture absorption and chemical resistance. The grafted samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The additional peaks observed in FTIR spectra of grafted samples confirmed the grafting of monomer onto gelatinized starch. The grafted co-polymers have been successfully used for the removal metal ions and organic dyes from aqueous system. Copyright © 2012 VBRI Press.

Kinetic Study of Graft Polymerization of Acrylic Acid and Ethyl Methacrylate onto Starch by Ceric Ammonium Nitrate

Graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and ethyl methacrylate (EMA) onto starch (St) were carried out in aqueous solution using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as redox system under N2 atmosphere. The effect of pH, reaction time, temperature, concentrations of CAN, St, and monomers on the graft yield was investigated. Monomer reactivity was in the following order: AA>EMA.<em...

Synthesis, Characterization and Thermal Stability Study of Styrene-based Ionomers I) Programmed Heating Experiments (10 oC/min to 500 oC)

Ionomers are generally described by copolymers having either acrylic or methacylic acid as one component and the other component is mostly either ethylene or styrene. The objective of this research was to study the thermal behaviour and stability of ionomers of styrene with some alkali metal acrylates. These materials have been synthesized by neutralization of the respective copoly...

Swelling and Rheology of Saponified Starch-g- Polyacrylonitrile Copolymers. Effect of Starch Granule Pretreatment and Grafted Chain Length

A series of well-characterized starch-g-polyacrylonitrile (PAN) graft copolymers was prepared from corn starch which had been heated in water at temperatures up to 94°C to vary the extent of starch granule swelling and disruption. Graft polymerization onto gelatinized starch gave less frequent grafting of higher molecular weight PAN than comparable graft polymerizations onto ungelatinized starc...

The Effect of Modified Starch Based Fat Replacer on Milk Properties

In this study, modified starch was used as a fat replacer in the milk. The fat replacer was manufactured from modified starch such as pre-gelatinized and cross–linked starches. Modified starches were manufactured by hydrochloric acid and citric acid treatments from potato and wheat and were added to skim milk at concentrations of 0.15%, 0.30% and 0.45%. Viscosity, total solid, fat content, titr...

Graft Polymerization of Vinyl Acetate onto Starch. Saponification to Starch-g-Poly(vinyl Alcohol)

Graft polymerizations of vinyl acetate onto granular corn starch were initiated by cobalt-60 irradiation of starch-monomer-water mixtures. and ungrafted poly(vinyl acetate) was separated from the graft copolymer by benzene extraction. Conversions of monomer to polymer were quantitative at a radiation dose of 1.0 IvIrad. However, over half of the polymer was present as ungrafted poly(vinyl aceta...
